Voting with the blessed one

Voting with the blessed one

I voted in the 2020 election this day. I have a decal on my shirt as evidence. My wife is the witness for all times that in the face of COVID and off-the-historical chart Republican behavior, I voted because it is important.

As it turned out, we voted today with the “blessed one.” She was in line when we got there. She wasn’t wearing a mask. Just an off-colored camouflage jersey that read, “Blessed 1.” The couple in front of her offered and gave her a mask. She put it in her pocket.

We, them, us all moved from the corner of West Washington Street and whatever the street by the library/museum is called to the very doors of the Jefferson County Courthouse. She made it pretty deep down the hall approaching voting ground zero, when Courthouse law enforcement gave her yet another mask. She put it on, and did the naked nose, inviting anyone, someone, to question the choice of the “Blessed 1.”

The County Clerk check-in folks did their jobs, checking credentials efficiently and cold. I felt they were on the frontline of ensuring that the wrong, unworthy folks would be turned away or arrested. The walk-you-to-the-voting-booth folks rocked it. Their energy was positive, helpful, and an invitation to be a part of celebrating Democracy.

The last I saw of the “Blessed 1” she was headed up Liberty Street, unmasked. In these days of COVID and the 2020 election, I expect no less.
